Jakarta, July 22, 2024 – An in-depth Focum Group Discussion (FGD) on decolonizing education in Indonesia was held on Monday, July 22, 2024, at Baitun Nadwah, Darunnajah Islamic Boarding School. The event was attended by Cecile Jagoo, a lecturer from the University of Bristol, along with Muhammad Irfanudin Kurniawan, Duna Izfanna, and Hasim Abdul Jamil from Darunnajah University, and four students from the university.
This FGD was organized to discuss the lingering impact of colonialism on Indonesia’s education system and to explore the efforts made by Darunnajah Islamic Boarding School in decolonizing education through the values of Panca Jiwa, Panca Bina, Panca Jangka, and Panca Dharma. The discussion also aimed to strengthen academic collaboration between Darunnajah University and the University of Bristol.

“The decolonization of education in Indonesia is a complex and ongoing process that requires the collective efforts of policymakers, educators, communities, and students. By embracing the diverse cultural and intellectual traditions of the nation, Indonesia can create an education system that empowers all learners and fosters a more just and equitable society.,” said Cecile Jagoo, a lecturer from the University of Bristol, during the discussion.
This discussion is expected to be the initial step in deepening the study and implementation of decolonizing education in Indonesia. The collaboration between Darunnajah University and the University of Bristol is anticipated to enrich academic insights and support the advancement of a better education system. Both institutions are committed to continuing their cooperation in research and educational development that values and integrates local wisdom.
This activity reflects a significant hope for the creation of a more inclusive and locally relevant education system, as well as the fostering of stronger relationships between Indonesian and international educational institutions.
